Y1U2 Positions through Iterating

Week 1

《From 100 to 0》
The evidence of historical culpability must be acknowledged without disregarding its authenticity.

Critical Questions:Image authenticity

The whole experiment revolves around how to use an image with a very strong historical value, through 100 iterations, eventually completely lose the original meaning of the image, even if the meaning is completely upside down

First of all

I thought about a number of different topics, and I felt that choosing historical images was the most meaningful to do. Because historical images are questioned and denied in many ways nowadays, I felt that this topic was the most relevant and the one I wanted to do and convey the most. So, I chose to use a real image from The Exhibition Hall of Crime Evidence of Japanese Army Unit 731, a piece of history that needs to be taken seriously in my country because its existence has been questioned and denied, so I wanted to use one of these images to explore it.

Secondly

The name of my publication is called 《From 100 To 0》

The reason why is the process of going from 100 to 0 is the order of iterations. And it’s also means the historical value of the images. You can see from the first image on the cover that it is the original image, and it has a strong historical value. But by removing key elements from the image, the historical value of the image is reduced. Finally, I combined the empty parts of the image with another landscape photo together. You could see in the final combination image, the empty space is covered with flowers, and this is in complete opposite to the original image.

In the whole process, I divided the image into 400 circle fragments and categorised the key fragments, removing the fragments by the order of: kid, violent person, tool, number, so that it can be clearly observed in the process how the image is gradually losing its value.

Finally

I really enjoyed myself during the whole project, even though it was exhausting and time-consuming. I also know that how the removal of key elements from a image can have a big impact on the image. And by combining it with another image it can completely reverse and change the authenticity of the image, and this was a very meaningful part of the project for me, and  through this piece of work I felt I was able to express my very strong opinions and attitudes, so I still enjoyed it a lot.
